Redfall - Phil Spencer's Release Comments

Redfall has been met with a number of launch issues on all platforms, including:

  • Performance issues on PC and Xbox consoles, with many players reporting crashes, stuttering, and frame rate drops.
  • Technical issues, such as graphical glitches, bugs, and AI problems.
  • Content issues, such as a lack of variety in the enemies and missions, and a short campaign.
  • Critical reception was mixed, with some critics praising the game's unique setting and characters, while others criticizing its technical problems and lack of polish
As a result of these issues, Redfall received a "Mostly Negative" rating on Steam, and many players have expressed their disappointment with the game. Arkane Studios has since released a number of patches to address the technical issues, but the game's critical reception has remained mixed.

Phil Spencer, the head of Xbox, expressed his disappointment with the release of Redfall in a recent interview with Greg Miller & Tim Gettys of the Kinda Funny Xcast podcast on May 4, 2023. He said that he was "upset with myself" and that the team was "disappointed" by the launch reception of the game. He also acknowledged that the critical response to Redfall was not what they had hoped for.

When asked about Redfall, Spencer said that he was "disappointed" with the game's launch. He said that he had been a fan of Arkane Studios' previous games, such as Dishonored and Prey, and that he had high hopes for Redfall. However, he said that the game did not meet his expectations.

Spencer also acknowledged that the critical response to Redfall was not what they had hoped for. He said that the team had worked hard on the game and that they were disappointed with the way it was received by critics.

Spencer concluded by saying that he was "upset with myself" for the way Redfall turned out. He said that he wanted to make sure that Xbox delivered on the promise of high-quality games and that he was committed to making sure that didn't happen again.
