DEAD SPACE 3 - DEMO IMPRESSIONS

When first loading up the Dead Space 3 demo you’re politely greeted by a video thanking you for downloading the demo and giving a quick tour of what you’ll find in the 2gbs you just downloaded. It’s a lot like that video that repeats itself on aeroplane tvs and more inclined to be as the demo begins with Isaac waking from a crash landing, and whether you’re playing the solo or co-op campaign demo, another passenger will wake from the wreck as well. I was somewhat disappointed that the solo campaign is exactly the same as the co-op but without the brusque banter between Isaac and his new co-op partner, John Carver. This did make up for the lack of communication between myself and whoever was controlling John at the time (as players can drop in a out) and gave the characters a much more realistic bond.

The mechanics of the game are still the same, get spooked, stamp on boxes and get hurled around like Uncharted’s Nathan Drake. One big difference though is the work bench which now allows you to fully customise your weapons through attachments, upgrades and more. I managed to upgrade (or perhaps downgrade) my machine gun into semi-automatic rifle and later completely changed it into a tesla firing gun with some kind of Wolverine-esque slashing alternate fire mode. I was impressed and would love to try different variations of customising the weapons but I have also been hugely put off by the fact that the full game will accept in-game microtransactions to allow players to buy resources without the need of scavenging. This isn’t necessary but the thought of including it is ludicrous and simply a method to earn more money from what is already a full priced game.

Overall the experience wasn’t different from the previous two Dead Space games so if you’re a fan and want to continue Isaacs ongoing misfortune then expect to get more of what you like. The only big differences I took from the demo, though not a huge sample of the game, were the co-op supplements (which are no more than that) and the work bench. This may be the best in the series as they improve the game with each title or it may dip, like how Uncharted 3 did, and lack the experiences that the second game did so well.
